Question

A fisherman and his young nephew are in a boat on a small pond. Both are wearing life jackets. The nephew is holding a large helium filled balloon by a string. Consider each action below independently and indicate whether the level of the water in the pond, Rises, Falls, is Unchanged or Cannot tell. The fisherman knocks the tackle box overboard and it sinks to the bottom. The nephew gets in the water and pops the helium ballon The fisherman lowers the anchor and it hangs one foot above the bottom of the pond. The fisherman fills a glass with water from the pond and drinks it. The nephew pops the helium balloon. The fisherman lowers himself in the water and floats on his back. Think about Archimedes Principle. How does the volume of fluid displaced by a body which 'floats' differ from that for a body which sinks

Explanation / Answer

part a ) Fall

The tackle box volume presumably will not displace as much mass of water as its weight did when in the boat. The level falls

part b ) Rise

After getting in the water to float, but before releasing the balloon, the nephew and the balloon displace just as much water as when he was in the boat holding the balloon. However, after releasing the balloon, he displaces more water. Therefore the pond rises

part c ) unchanged

part d ) Unchanged

the water mass now in the man is equal to the mass removed from the pond.

part e ) Rise

After the nephew pops his balloon, he displaces more water, so the pond rises

part f ) Unchanged

After getting in the water to float, the fisherman displaces just as much water as when he was in the boat. Therefore, the level of the pond remains unchanged
