Explanation / Answer

Thyroid glands produce a hormone called thyroid hormones. They include triiodothyronine and thyroxine

Thyroxine regulates body's metabolic rates, heart rate, digestive functions, brain and various other body functions.

hypothyroidism occurs when thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones. Whereas in hyperthroidism excessive amount of thyroid hormones is produced.

Excessive amount of thyroid hormones can increase the resting metabolic rate by 100%. and insufficient amounts can decrease the rate by 50%..It does this action by increasing the number of mitochondria and increasing the number of Na+/K+ ATPase and Na+ and K+ membrane permeability. Upto 40% of cells energy is expend on maintaining electrochemical gradient. Therefore increase of Na+/K+ ATPase in cell membrane increases the basal or resting metabolic rate.

As the metabolitc rate increase heat production increases and body temperature increases leading to heat intolerance. It can also increase apetite as metablolitc rate increases. The reverse occurs in case of hypothyroidism.

Sign and symptoms of hypothyroidism is

A) bradychardia, low heart rate

B) weight gain

C) cold intolerance

E) depression

2) Sign and symptoms of hyperthyroidism

A.

weight loss

B.

Agitation and nervousnes

C. Increased heart beat, trachycardia

E. Heat intolerance and sweating

G.

increased appetite

A.

weight loss
