Question

yLabBench Activity Sample Problem 2 Red eyes Sepia eyes In a certain population of 1000 fruit flies, 640 have red eyes while the remainder have sepla eyes. The sepla eye trait is recessive to red eyes. How many individuals would you expect to be homozygous for red eye color? Hint: The first step is always to calculate of Start by determining the number of fruit files that are homozygous recessive. If you need help doing the calculation, look back at Check Your Answer - Previous Concept Next Concept -

Explanation / Answer

Since there are 640 flies having red eyes, the remaining 360 (1000-460) flies represent sepla eyes, these all are homozyzous recessive (q2)

q2(percent) = 360/1000 x100 = 36% = 0.36

or

q = 0.6

As p+q =1 , p = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4

No. of heterozygous red eyes flies = 2pq = 2 (0.4) (0.6) = 0.48

This means that 48% of red eyes flies are heterozygous, which accounts as

48/100 x 640 = 307.2 flies are heterozygous

therefore no. of homozygous red eyed flies = 640 - 307

= 333
