Question

The Ballistic Pendulum

a block of mass, M is supended by a massless wire of length, L and, after a completly inelastic collision with a bukket of mass, m, swings up to a maximum height y<L.

Find:

(a) the speed, v of the block with the bullet in it immediatly after impact

(b) the tension force, T in the wire immediatly after impact

(c) the inital horizontal velocit, Vo of the bullet.

I am not sure if I am doing this problem right so far. Please explain why you took the steps you did to solve the problem because I want to be able to understand it conceptually as well. Thank you, in advance.

PHY218 SPRING 2016 Review for Exam#2: Week 9 Problem 1: The Ballistie Pendulunm A block of mass M is suspended by a massless wire of length L and, after a completely inelastic collision with a bullet of mass m. swings up toa maximum height y 1.. Find: (a) the speed y of the block with the bullet in it immediately after impact (b) the tension force T in the wire immediately after impact: (c) the initial horizontal yelocity y of the bullet Vo Ceintcipita orce cerkiesce Ferce

Explanation / Answer

a) applying momentum conservation,

v = mv0/(m+M)

b) T = (m+M)(v2/L + g)

c) conserving energy after collision,

0.5 x (m+M)v2 = (m+M)gy

[mv0/(m+M)]2 = 2gy => v0 = [(m+M)/m] x sqrt(2gy)
