Question

Two blocks are stuck together with h a piece of plastic explosives. They have masses of 20 Khalil and 30 kg, respectively, and are originally moving with a speed of 20 m/s in the x direction: the plastic explosive is set off,-!: after hthe dust settles, the 20 kg block is moving with a speed of 6 m/s in the NEGATIVE x direction. What is the velocity of the 30 kg block, and how much energy is released by the explosion? Two blocks are stuck together with h a piece of plastic explosives. They have masses of 20 Khalil and 30 kg, respectively, and are originally moving with a speed of 20 m/s in the x direction: the plastic explosive is set off,-!: after hthe dust settles, the 20 kg block is moving with a speed of 6 m/s in the NEGATIVE x direction. What is the velocity of the 30 kg block, and how much energy is released by the explosion?

Explanation / Answer

here,

m1 = 20 kg

m2 = 30 kg

initial speed of combination , u = 20 m/s

final speed of m1 , v1 = - 6 m/s

let the final speed of m2 be v2

using conservation of momentum

(m1 + m2) * u = m1*v1 + m2*v2

( 20 + 30) * 20 = - 20 * 6 + 30 * v2

v2 = 37.33 m/s

the velocity of 30 kg block is 37.33 m/s

the energy released , E = 0.5 * ( m1*v1^2 + m2*v2^2 - (m1+m2)*u^2)

E = 0.5 * ( 20*6^2 + 30*37.33^2 - 50*40^2)

E = 1.13 * 10^4 J

the energy released in explosion is 1.13 * 10^4 J
