Question

two baseballs are simultaneously released from the roof of a building. The ground below is flat. Ball 1 is thrown horizontally with a speed of 10 m/s. Ball 2 is dropped with an initial speed of zero. ignoring air resistance, which statement best describes the result.

a) Ball 1 hits the ground first, with greater speed.

b) Ball 1 hits the ground first, but the balls hit with equal speed.

c)Ball 2 hits the ground, with a greater speed

d) They hit the ground at the same time, with equal speed.

e)They hit the ground at the same time, ball 1 has a greater speed.

Explanation / Answer

Initial ball 1 has kinetic energy and potential energy both, but ball 2 has only potential energy.

When they hit the ground, their initial energy gets converted to kinetic energy

ball 1 will have greater kinetic energy on hitting the ground, as it initially had some extra energy. So ball 1 will hit the ground with greater speed than ball 2.

Both balls will hits the ground at same time, as time of flight depends only on height from which balls are thrown. Since both balls are dropped/thrown from same height they will reach the ground simultaneously.

Ans is e)
