Explanation / Answer

Ionic compound dissolves in water and produces aqueous anions and cations in solution. For example, common salt (NaCl) is ionic compound. In a salt water solution, sodium (Na+ ) ion - cation & Chloride ion (Cl- ) - anions are present.

Covalent compound dissolves in water and produces aqueous covalent compound.

However, most of the covalent compounds do not dissolves in water. Exceptions are sugar and ethanol. The -OH functional group of these molecules forms hydrogen bond with the water molecule while dissolving.
