Question

A 5 kg ladder rests against a wall. It covers a horizontal distance of 10 m and a vertical distance of 20 m. The center of gravity of the ladder is exactly halfway between its two endpoints. The magnitude of static frictional force between the ladder and the wall is 10 N. The ladder is in equilibirum.

(a) Consider the ladder as a system and draw a free-body diagram. Also setup a co-ordinate system along the horizontal and vertical.

(b) Apply Newton’s 2nd Law along the horizontal and vertical directions to get two equations with three unknowns.

(c) Get the third equation by calculating the net torque on the system.

(d) Determine the magnitude of normal force on the ladder from the wall.

(e) Determine the magnitude of normal force on the ladder from the floor.

(f) Determine the magnitude of friction force on the ladder from the floor.
