Heat & Temperature concepts
1. Explain why we get cold so much quicker moving through water than moving through air even when the temperature of the water and the air is the same 20°C
2. Explain the physics of why clothing helps prevent heat loss.
3. Explain why the exhalation of warmer water vapor enhances the cooling of our body.
4. In the summer many homes use ceiling fans to make the hot summer temperatures feel cooler. Explain why other factors than just temperature influence heat loss and which physical mechanisms are causing this.
Explanation / Answer
1. The heat transfer in air takes place through convection which is effectively much weaker as compared to the heat transfer in water which is convection.
2. Clothes are poor conductor of electricity therefore when we wear them they prevent our body heat from getting lost in atmosphere and thus keep us warm.
3. When we inhale the air it's temperature is low as compared to our body temperature. This air when it reaches into our lungs becomes warmer and thus absorbs a part of our body heat in form of water vapour which then gets out of our body through exhalation. This way exhalation enhances the cooling of our body.
4. In summer our body sweats and the running fan helps the process of evaporation of these sweating moisture which takes away a part of our body heat thus making us feel cooler.
