Question
Suppose you are walking from the Science Center to Giles Hall that is 200 m away (straight line) at a speed of 1.5 m/s. Suddenly, the wind blows in a direction perpendicular to your direction of motion for a very short time at a speed of 2 m/s that changes your motion by 10 degrees to the horizontal. How long will it take for you to reach the Giles Hall? First draw a picture, define the coordinate frame, draw all the related vectors, and calculate the final answer. What would have been the time taken, had there been no wind?
Explanation / Answer
time taken when wind blows,
t = d/v
= 200/1.5
= 133.3 s
time taken when wind do not blow,
t = d/v
= 200/1.5
= 133.3 s
In both cases the time taken is same. Because, The component of velocity of the person towards Giles does not change.
Because, Wind is blowing perpendicular to the motion of the person.
the vertical displacemt of the person
y = 200*tan(10)
= 35.26 m
