Question

A girl and her sled start at the top of a hill which is 32m above sea level, with a speed v1 and proceed downhill without friction. What is the minimum v1 to just barely make it up the next hill, which is 57m above sea level? Hint, Use Conservation of Mechanical Energy.] A cart with mass ml = 600g collides and sticks with another cart of mass m2 - 350 g. Ml's velocity is +15 m/s (to the right), and that of m2 = -2.4 m/s (to the left), What is the velocity of the two carts after the collision? Magnitude = Direction = (circle one) right, or left How much kinetic energy has been lost to heat and other forms? Delta KE = J What type of collision is this? (Circle one): Completely elastic elastic Inelastic Completely inelastic

Explanation / Answer

Q2.

a)Assuming the initial speeds of m1 and m2 were v1 and v2 respectively, then conservation of momentum requires

m1*v1 + m2*v2 = (m1+m2)*v'

And as a result:
v' = (m1*v1 + m2*v2)/(m1+m2)
v' = (0.6*1.5 - 0.350*2.4)/0.6+0.35
= 0.063 m/s

Direction - To the right.

b)KE = 1/2 * mv^2
= 1/2 * 0.95*(0.063)^2
= 0.00188 J

c) Completely inelastic
