Question

Theories and hypotheses For each scenario below, decide if it is describing a theory or a hypothesis and classify it accordingly. Hypothesis Theory Plausible explanations for a single natural event Accepted explanations for how the world works A researcher notices that her plant has stopped growing and wonders if it could be because of a lack of sunlight Years of evidence have demonstrated that all living things are comprised of cells Research has demonstrated all living things share a common ancestor A scientist notices that a certain mold is inhibiting bacterial growth and suggests that the mold is producing antibiotic substances Reset

Explanation / Answer

Hypothesis are:

1)Plausible explanations for a single natural event

because it is probable and suggested but it does not involve any research or explanation.

2)A researcher notices that her plant has stopped growing and wonders it could be because of lack of sunlight.

because the researcher is not sure about the real cause and he has not done any experiements to prove it. This is why it is a hypothesis.

3) A scientist notices that a certain mold is inhibitingbacterial growth and suggests that the mold is producing antiobiotic substances

because the scientist is giving a hypothesis and has not performed any experiments to show his results .

Theory:

1) Accepted explanations for how the world works

because this has been accomplished through a series verified and proven factors

2)Research has demonstrated all living things share a common ancestor

because research involves testing and explaining the statements with experiments

3)Years of evidence have demonstrated that all living things are comprised of cells

because it has been proved by evidence ,research and proven experiements as done in Theory.
