Question
Multiple imaging techniques are available to "look inside" the body in a non-invasive way and diagnose a variety of conditions and disorders. Choose one medical imaging technique and include the following in your report: -Name of the technique. -Describe the technique in your own words. -List and describe several applications of the technique (in other words, tell why this particular technique might be used) If you choose ultrasound for this report, include MORE than just obstetrical uses. - Describe several advantages and disadvantages of technique. - Find an image prepared using this technique on the web (Try www.google.com and search the images) and provide a link to this image. -Include any other interesting information. -Properly reference ALL resouces you used. Some examples of medical imaging techniques suggestion: X Rays CT scans (computerized tomography) Ultrasound scans Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography - PET scans. The technique is CT scan which is called as the Computerized tomography scan.
This scan involves the patient to be present in a tunnel shaped machine and the machines rotates around the patient and takes series X-rays from different angles. These images are furthet sent to a computer in order to create slices or cross- sections of the body. Such scans show a detailed image of soft tissues, blood vessels along with the bones present in the body. It is uses to visualize the brain, chest, shoulders, head as well as the abdomen.
The applications of this technique is to diagnose infections and bone fractures as the X-rays depict the place inside the body from where the bone has broken or is cracked so that the plaster can be put immediately over that place for a spreedy treatment. It also helps to find tumors as the x-rays clearly depict any inflammation present inside the body The x-ray shows spots which clearly show additional mass or inflammations.
The advantages of this technique is to see the inside of the body through x-rays which helps to diagnose internal bleedings, infections, masses. They are also used to monitor the heart disease and study the blood vessels in detail and treat fractures immediately as well.
The disadvantages of this technique is that it causes various side effects which include nausea, constipation, abdominal cramping and diarrhea because of its heavy radiation to the body.
