Question
A ballistic pendulum a device for measuring speed of bullet consists of a block of wood suspended by chord. Then the bullet is fired into the block, the block is free to rise. If a 12 gram bullet traveling towards a 3kg block gets lodged into the block, and the bullet block system rises to 0.1 m, what is the initial speed of the bullet? A ballistic pendulum a device for measuring speed of bullet consists of a block of wood suspended by chord. Then the bullet is fired into the block, the block is free to rise. If a 12 gram bullet traveling towards a 3kg block gets lodged into the block, and the bullet block system rises to 0.1 m, what is the initial speed of the bullet?Explanation / Answer
here,
mass of bullet, mb = 12g = 0.012 kg
mass of block, mw = 3 kg
height attained after collision, h = 0.1 m
from conservation of Energy :
Kinetic enrgy before collision = Gained potential Energy by system
0.5* mb * v^2 = (Mb+mw)*g*h
solving for initial velocity of bullet, v
v = sqrt( 2*(Mb+mw)*g*h/mb )
v = sqrt( 2*(0.012 + 3)*9.8*0.1/0.012 )
v = 22.18 m/s
Since the energy is conserved throughout the motion no energy is dissipated.
