Question
how does one find the percent of momentum conserved in the y direction when both pucks initial y-velocity is zero? Can't use pfinal/pinitial because of divide by zero error. how does one find the percent of momentum conserved in the y direction when both pucks initial y-velocity is zero? Can't use pfinal/pinitial because of divide by zero error. how does one find the percent of momentum conserved in the y direction when both pucks initial y-velocity is zero? Can't use pfinal/pinitial because of divide by zero error.Explanation / Answer
Though initial velocity in y-direction is zero, momentum is conserved.
After collsion, If one puck moves above +x axis, the another puck moves below +x axis.
It means The first puck gets poistive momentum in y-direction, the another puck gets negative momntum in y-direction.
so, net momentum in y-direction remains zero.
In Y-direction,
m1*u1y + m2*u2y = m1*v1y + m2*v2y
0 + 0 = m1*v1y + m2*v2y
m1*v1y = -m2*v2y
here if v1y is poistive then v2y is ngetive
or
if v1y is negative then v2y is positive
