Question

Two rectangular blocks are stacked on a table. The upper block has a mass of 5.9 kg, the lower block has a mass of 18.6 kg. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the lower block and the table is 0.33. The coefficient of static friction between the upper and the lower blocks is 0.225. A string is attached to the lower block, and an external force is applied in horizontal direction to pull on the string, as shown. What is the maximum force that one can apply without having the upper block slide off?

Explanation / Answer

Fmax - u*(m1+m2)g = m1+m2)*a

on the upper block , Fpusedo = m2a = um2g

=> amax = 0.225*9.8 = 2.2 m/s^2

=> Fmax = 0.33*(5.9+18.6)*9.8 + (5.9+18.6)*2.2 = 133.13 N
