Question

A bicycle is turned upside down, the front wheel is spinning (see the drawing), and there is an angular acceleration. At the instant shown, there are six points on the wheel that have arrows associated with them. Which of the following quantities could the arrows represent, tangential velocity, tangential acceleration, or centripetal acceleration? In each case, answer why the arrows do or do not represent the quantity. tangential velocity This answer has not been graded yet. tangential acceleration This answer has not been graded yet. tangential acceleration This answer has not been graded yet. centripetal acceleration The answer is not been graded yet.

Explanation / Answer

(a) At any given moment, the tangential velocity of a point on the wheel is given by,

v = r

where '' is the angular speed of the wheel which is the same for all the points on the wheel at a particular instant and 'r' is the radial distance of the point.

In the figure, the direction of the arrows is tangential and the length of the arrows increase with radial distance. Hence, they could represent tangential velocity.

(b) At any given moment, the tangential acceleration of a point on the wheel is given by,

a = r

where '' is the angular acceleration which is the same for all the points on the wheel at a particular instant.

In the figure, the direction of the arrows is tangential and the length of the arrows increase with radial distance. Hence, they could represent tangential acceleration.

(c) Centripetal acceleration at any point on the wheel is directed towards the centre of the wheel. SInce the arrows are not directed towards the centre, they could not represent centripetal acceleratiion.
