I need this answer to be at least 3 complete sentences. I will need to cite my assignment using cited scholarly articles or textbooks, so please include where you got the information. There are already answers for this online, but I can't tell where the information is actually coming from without a citation. Thanks for your help!
The inner membrane of the mitochondria does not allow chloride ions to pass through. If mutation in a channel allowed chloride ions to pass into the mitochondria, what could be the effect?
Explanation / Answer
Chloride ions are generally not permeabilized by the inner membrane of the mitochondria. On the other hand, it is only permeable to protons to be moved inside the matrix of mitochondria which not only maintains the pH of matrix but also drives the proton-motive force and ATP generation. If mitochondrial membrane becomes permeable to chloride ions, the protons will be neutralized and they will be no more available for oxidation and generation of water, thereby generation of ATP. Gradually, the cells will be unable to generate energy and bioenergetic failure will result.
