Suppose you want to make a new connection to species in the concept map. Which of the terms below could fill in the blank in this new connection: is a mechanism that defines the separation between species Select all that apply. Part 1 of 2 Predation Hybrid inviability Hybrid breakdown 0.4 points Temporal isolation Habitat isolation Hybrid fitness Hybrid isolation Behavioral isolation Zygote isolation Gene pool intermicing Sympatric isolation Allopatric isolation Chemical interference Gametic isolation Mechanical isolation Organismal isolation Hybrid infertility Resat 24 25 of 25Next >Explanation / Answer
Hi,
24.
The biological species are defined on the basis of reproductive isolation. This means if two individuals cannot reproduce and produce fertile offsprings those two individuals belong to two different species. There are pre-mating isolating mechanisms such as:
-temportal isolation- the reproductive season is different
-ecological isolation- they have different habitats
-behavioral isolation- choice
-Mechanical isolation- sperm is not transfered due to failed copulation.
There are post mating isolating mechanisms
- Gametic incomatibility - egg not fertilized
- Zygotic mortality - egg is fertilized but zygote does not mature
- Hybrid inviability - Embry forms but looses viability during growth
- Hybrid sterility - Hybrid is viable but cannot reproduce
- Hybrid breakdown - F1 hybrids are fertile, but F2 are sterile so the generation breaks down.
So answering you question: Fill these in the blank space:
Hybrid inviability, hybrid breakdown, Temporal isolation, Habitat isolation, behavioral isolation, Sympatric isolation, Allopatric isolation, Mechanical isolation, Hybrid infertility, organismal isolation.
25. Most of the statments are right except the following:
a. evolution may stop....extinction : Evolution is an ongoing process and it never stops; Species go extinct due to inability to survive hostile environment or lack of suitable habitat, over predation, exploitng the habitat...etc
b. Reprocductive barriers can lead to extinction of a species or few species, but not mass extinction.
c. Thepunctuated equilibrium is characterised by isolated episodes of rapid speciation between long periods of little or no change.
d. Taxa are descrption....tree; Taxa are the group of organism with shared characters. phylogenic tree only connects these taxas with common ancestor. Taxa are not the description of evolutionary event.
Rest all are valid connections.
