Question

Open ActivPhysics Tutorial 11.9, “Motion of a Charge in an Electric Field.” Complete Questions 1–5 in the tutorial and use what you have learned to answer the following questions: Reset the simulation and return the x-component of velocity to +5.0 x 106 m/s. Now, if you increase the electric field from +2.0 kV/m (+2.0 kN/C) to +4.0 kV/m, how does that affect: (a) the electron's acceleration in the x direction; (b) the electron's acceleration in the y direction (how can you test this?); and (c) the time of flight?

Explanation / Answer

Part (a)

The electron's acceleration in x direction will increase.

Part (b)

The electron's acceleration in y direction will not increase.

Since elctric field is increased in x direction only.

Part (c)

As time of flight depends on y value, no change in y scceleration will result no change in time of flight.

No change in time of flight will imply no acceleration along y.(for second part of (b))
