Question

Pulley Systems and Mechanical Advantage

What is mechanical advantage? Explain in your report.

Using a single pulley and spring scale, lift a 1 kg mass. Lift it a few times to get an idea of how much friction to expect and compare it to the weight of the load. What is the mechanical advantage of this system? What, if any, is the benefit in using it?

Then design and rig a two-pulley system, a three-pulley system and so on up to six pulleys. You may want to look online for images of pulley systems. Record the forces required and compare each one to the weight of the load. What are the mechanical advantages of each of these systems? What, if any, are the benefits in using these systems? Is there a point at which the effort becomes counter-productive? Discuss.

Machines make work easier, but they do not make it go away. Energy is neither created nor destroyed, or as the old saying goes, there is no such thing as a truly free lunch. What are the tradeoffs to any mechanical systems? In this case, what is gained and what is lost in using pulley systems? Discuss in your lab report.

Explanation / Answer

mechanical advantage is measure of ratio of output amplified force to input force.

by using a lever, we can lift heavy loads easlily by applying small input forces. these simple machines makes it lot easier. it make the work easier but still we have to do some work.this is in accordance with the principle of conservation of energy.

tradeoff is any mechanical system is the change needed to make the effort easier to do the same kind of work.
