Answer the questions below. MEASUREMENTS IN BIOLOGY (10pts/item) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the metric system of measurement? 1. the system that may be the most popular in their home country/region? Suppose that a biologist states that the average height of undergraduate students at your university is 205 cm plus of munis a standard deviation of 17 cm. What does this mean? 3. 4. What does a small standard deviation signify? 5. What does a large standard deviation signify?Explanation / Answer
iloilo1. The advantage in using the metric system (decimal system) is easy to convet the different units to the same unit by just multiplying or dividing by (tens, hundreds, thousands etc.) for example converting millilitres to litres or grams to kilograms etc.
Disadvantage is it will not give the accurate values for some fractions for eg. 1/3 metres. the answer we get is 0.333... metres so we cannot predict the accurate value in case of this type of fractions.
2. The scientists use common measureing system Metric system to avoid confusion among the scientists when they compare the data with one another. If they would have some different measuring system according the country or the region they cannot compare their data with the other country or the region because they cannot understand the data so to avoid this condition we use INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS. eg. this is also same like the zoological name and botanical name. when the common name of our country for the specific organism is used some other coutnry they cannot understand the name so to avoid this conditon we have scientific names for every organism which is same in all the countries same way we have common measuring system.
4. The small standard deviation signifies the closely related value to the mean or we can say it as expected value. when the standard deviation answer is somewhat similar to the mean value then it is called as small standard deviation or low standard deviation.
5. when the value of the standard deviation is not close with the mean value means it is called large standard deviation or high standard deviation the value will be very far from the mean value.
