Question

An object with mass 3.1 kg is executing simple harmonic motion, attached to a spring with spring constant 270 N/m . When the object is 0.024 m from its equilibrium position, it is moving with a speed of 0.65 m/s . Part A Calculate the amplitude of the motion. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. A = SubmitMy AnswersGive Up Part B Calculate the maximum speed attained by the object. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. vmax = Submit

Explanation / Answer

A)

Let the amplitude of motion be A

At a posion when x = 0.024 m

So, the potential energy stored in spring, PEs = 0.5*k*x^2

At this time, the Kinetic energy, KE = 0.5*mv^2

where v = 0.65 m/s

So, by conservation of energy,

0.5*kA^2 = 0.5*mv^2 + 0.5*kx^2

So, 0.5*270*A^2 = 0.5*3.1*0.65^2 + 0.5*270*0.024^2

So, A = 0.074 m <------answer

B)

Let Maximum speed attained be V

So, 0.5*m*V^2 = 0.5*k*A^2

So, 2.1*V^2 = 270*0.074^2

So, V = 0.84 m/s <------answer
