Question

The L-shaped object shown in the figure consists of three small masses connected by thin uniform rods, each rod of mass 3.00kg. Assume that the masses shown are accurate to three significant figures. What is the moment of inertia of this object? (a) about the x-axis, and (b) about the y-axis?

NOTE: I know the answers are the following: (a) 19.4kg*m^2 and (b) 76.2kg*m^2 I saw my teacher's answer key. I just don't know how to arrive at the answers.

Explanation / Answer

a)moment of inertia = 2*(ML2/3)=21.78

Moment of Inertia of the sytem about x axis

= I + Md2

d=L

= (2/3) ML2 + (ML2) = 5ML2/3=54.45

b) (2/3) ML2 + (ML2) = 5ML2/3=16.2
