Question

1)The meterstick shown to the right is 100 cm long. It is free to pivot around its center of gravity (CG), which is at the 50-cm mark. There is a 24.0-N block hanging from the 80-cm mark. Decide where each of the other blocks should be placed, one at a time, to balance out the 24.0-N block. At what mark on the meter stick would you place a 19.0-N block to balance the 24.0-N block?

a) at what mark on the meter stick would you place a 19.0 N block to balance the 24.0 N block?

b) at what mark on the meter stick would you place a 42.0 N block to balance the 24.0 N block?

Explanation / Answer

Given that

The meterstick shown to the right is (L) = 100 cm long

It is free to pivot around its center of gravity (CG), which is at the 50-cm mark

There is a 24.0-N block hanging from the 80-cm mark

We know that, We need to cancel the moments from each of the blocks

Therefore we consider the block is at a distance of xcm then

24(80-50)=19(50-x)

37.894=50-x

Then x =50-37.894=12.10cm

b)

similalry

24(80-50)=42(50-x)

24*30=42(50-x)

720/42=50-x

17.14=50-x

x =32.86cm
