A speaker emits a mystery tone. When the speaker plays into the air column at 0°C, the first and fourth nodes are found to be separated by a distance of 0.85 m. What is the frequency of the mystery tone?
_____ Hz

Select all that apply! a node in the middle a node at the closed end an anti-node in the middle an anti-node at the open end a node at the open end an anti-node at the closed end IncorrectExplanation / Answer
speed of sound at 0 degrees, vo = 331 m/s
let lamda is the wavelength of sound wave.
we know distance between adjacent nodes = lamda/2
so, distance between first and fourth nodes = 3*lamda/2
0.85 = 3*lamda/2
==>lamda = 2*0.85/3
= 0.567 m
now Apply,sound speed v = lamda*f
==> f = v/lamda
= 331/0.567
= 584 Hz
boundary condition.
a node at the closed end
an anti-node at the open end
