Prelab 4: The following graph shows how a variable force, in this case a spring force, acts over a distance F=kx 0 a.) What value of stretch (x) has the greatest force? Which has the least? b.) Show that the indicated area under the force curve is just the potential energy stored in the spring by the force Hint: What is the area of a triangle?) c) What units dos the"leagts" of the tringle have What unts dosthe "height" of the triangle have? What units does the height" of the triangle have? What units does the area under the curve have? (You will use this result in Part II of the lab.)

Explanation / Answer

a. greatest force will strech xf

least force will strech xo

b. Area of trianlge = 0.5 base * hieght

so for smaller triangle Area A1 = 0.5 * xo * F

but at x= xo , F = Kxo

so A1 = 0.5 * xo * K xo = 0.5 k xo^2

similarly

Area of trianlge = 0.5 base * hieght

so for smaller triangle Area A2 = 0.5 * xf * F

but at x= xf , F = Kxf

so A1 = 0.5 * xo * K xo = 0.5 k xf^2

change of area = change of enery = 0.5 k xf^2 - 0.5 k xo^2

c. Length units are meters

Height F = Kx = N

Area under this curve gives Elastic Potential energy
