Question

number 10

10. You just can't stop playing whatever iteration of Warcraft is popular these days You create a grinding stone, which is a large, spinning stone wheel that can be used to sharpen axes, swords, or whatever sharp, pointy-thing you want sharpened (I'm told that you need Blacksmithing and 3x Heavy Stone). The stone may be thought of as a cylindrical disk of radius 0.350 m. If a constant force of 250 N is applied tangentially and produces an angular acceleration of 0.750 radians/s^2, what is that mass of the stone wheel? (The moment of inertia for a cylindrical disk, or ahem. s wheel, is I=1/2MR^2.)

Explanation / Answer

10)

Let M is the mass of spinning stone.

Moment of Inertia of the disk, I = (1/2)*M*R^2

= (1/2)*M*0.35^2

= 0.06125*M

Torque, T = F*R*sin(90)

= 250*0.35

= 87.5 N.m

angular acceleration, alfa = 0.75 rad/s^2

we know, Torque = I*alfa

87.5 = 0.06125*M*0.75

==> M = 87.5/(0.06125*0.75)

= 1905 kg <<<<<--------Answer
