Question

Magnus has reached the finals of a strength competition. In the first round, he has to pull a city bus as far as he can. One end of a rope is attached to the bus, while the other is tied around Magnus's waist. If a force gauge placed halfway down the rope reads out a constant 1.610 × 103 Newtons while Magnus pulls the bus a distance of 2.13 meters, how much work does the tension force do on Magnus? The rope is perfectly horizontal during the pull.

i get 3,429.3 joules.. but this is apparently wrong what am i doing wrong?

Explanation / Answer

forec= 1.610 x10^3 N

diatance d= 2.13m

The tension in the rope T acts on Magnus in the opposite direction as he pulls the bus , so theta= 180 degrees

work = F d cos theta

work= (1.610 x10^3 ) (2.3) cos 180

work= - 3429.3 joules

so you were just missing the negative sign due to oposite direction
