Question

It is common to label the end of a magnet which points towards the Earth's geographic North Pole as the North pole of the magnet. (This is a convention. ) Label your magnets this way. If you were to hang magnets all over the Earth, you would find that the Earth acts like a magnet with north and south poles. How does this statement relate to the earlier magnaprobe results? d. Based on your observations in parts a above, is the north pole of the Earth's magnet in the northern or southern hemisphere? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

b) when small magnet is hung over the earth, south pole of the magnet pointing towards the northern hemisphere (at the begining of the northern hemisphere, south pole of the magnet pointing towards the ground partially and it increase as we go towards the north pole but at the north pole of the earth, south pole of the magnet points vertically towards the ground). similarly,in southern hemisphere, north pole of the magnet pointing towards the south pole.

b) north pole of the earth is not the magnetic north pole. but actully it is magnetic south pole. but it is called north pole because north pole of the bar magnet (when it is suspended freely) pointing towards the south pole of the earth due to which it is called north pole and this convention is taken.similar thing happens for south pole. south pole of the bar magnet pointing towards the north pole of the earth magnet.

so, north pole of earth is in southern hemisphere and south pole of the earth is in northern hemisphere.
