Question
About 5 years ago, NASA launched a satellite to monitor the sun, called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (or SDO). Here is a picture of the sun using electromagnetic waves from the far ultraviolet or soft x-ray part of the spectrum. In order to take a picture like this, the camera must be outside of the earth's atmosphere, and not on the ground. Why?
a. Because the earth's atmosphere blocks electromagnetic waves of this type
b. The reason we put the camera on a satellite is because the picture is clearer. Pictures at these frequencies are possible but much blurrier from the ground.
Explanation / Answer
A. Because the earth's atmosphere blocks electromagnetic waves of this type.
