Question

A) estimate these quantities in the table for all equilibrium points possible 1. (2) The potential energy for this particle is given in the graph below. he particle has a total energy of-15 J. a) Estimate these quantities in the table for all equilibrium points possible. otal Energy otential Energy Kinetic Energy Force b) Estimate these quantities in the table for the turning points possible for the particle. urning Total Energy tial Energy ic Energy mate the Potiential Energy 30 20 10 E (U) -10 -20 -30 -40 x (m)

Explanation / Answer

a) At equibrium point:

The total energy will be constant which is -15 J and the force at equillibrium point is zero.

At x = 1m, the potential energy = 20 J Which is not possible because potential energy can't exceed the total energy as the kinetic energy can't be negative. Unstable equillibrium

At x = 2m, the potential energy = -30 J hence kinetic energy = 15 J, the equillibrium is stable.

At x = 3m, potential energy = -10 J not possible.

At x = 4m, the PE = -20 J hence KE = 5 J STABLE

At x = 5m PE = 20 J not possible.

b) Turning points, where velocity is zero and hence KE = 0 so PE = -15 J and TE = -15 N

at x = 1.6m, force = 50/2 = 25 N

at x = 2.8m, force = -20 N

at x = 3.4 m, force = 10 N

at x = 4.2m, force = -40 N
