Question

21.2 Torque Problems Work the following problems with your lab partners. Each member of the lab group should write out their own version of the solution. Activity Problem 21.1 Consider the disk shown in the figure. It is free to rotate about its center. The disk has three pegs situated as an equilateral triangle about the center; each peg is a distance r from the center of the disk. A different force is applied to each peg at an angle that is measured from the radial line that passes through the relevant peg. The disk is in rotational equilibrium ( = 0). The first force has a magnitude of F1 = 5N and is applied at an angle ,-30°. The second force has a magnitude of F2 = 6N and is applied at an angle 2= 25°. The third force is applied at an angle of 40°. What is the magnitude of F3? F3 Fi 02 01 F2

Explanation / Answer

For rotational equilibrium,

Net torque on system = 0

Net torque = (r x F1 x sin@1) + (r x F2 x sin@2) - (r x F3 x sin@3) = 0

F1 sin@1 + F2 sin@2 - F3 sin@3 = 0

5 sin30 + 6sin25 - F3 sin40 = 0

F3 = 7.83 N
