Question

I am stuck on this physics problem. Please help me. Thanks!

The horn on a commuter train emits sound with a frequency of 336.3 Hz when the train is at rest. The train sounds its horn as it passes a passenger platform at a constant speed of 41 m/s. What overall change in frequency is detected by a person on the platform as the train moves from approaching to receding? Remember that change of frequency means the final frequency minus the initial frequency in Hz. Be sure to include the correct sign on the answer. (Take the speed of sound to be 343 m/s.)

Explanation / Answer

Assuming sound velocity c = 343 m/s, f0 = 336.3 Hz.
A.
f (approaching) = f0*c/(c-ve) = 381.9566225 Hz
f (receding) = f0*c/(c+ve) = 300.3929688 Hz

deltaF = 81.56365375 Hz

lambda = c/f0 * (c-ve)/c = 0.898007731 m

Answere = 81.56365375 Hz
