Introduction:Explanation / Answer
Pharmacology involves a lot of memorization with respect to weighs, measurements and abbreviations used.
*Here the most important weight conversion is between ounces and grams for total volume of solid dosage forms. Pound to kilogram conversion is also important since patients tell their weight in pounds but dosage recommendation will be based on kilogram weight. So one should remember -
1kg = 2.2lb
1ounce =28.35 grams
*Measurement - Four systems of measurement are generally used in pharmacy - 1. Metric 2. Apothecaries 3. Avoirdupois 4. Common system.
*Abbreviations used - prescribed doses to a patient are usually communicated through a series of symbols and abbreviations. So a pharmacist needs to know these in order to select the correct medication. Some common used abbreviations may be summarised as -
ASA - Aspirin
CE - Conjugated estrogens
CPZ - chlorpromazine
EPO - erythropoietin
MOM - milk of magnesia
MVI - multivitamin
PCN - penicillin
Sometimes standard chemical abbreviations for electrolytes and classes of drugs may also be used.
Drug allergies are also abbreviated.
BID - twice a day
CID - five times a day
q12h - every 12 hours
QID - four times a day
