Question

There are two speakers at the front of the room. Each is outputting a 250Hz pure tone. For each of the following situations, will you hear constructive interference (a loud noise) or destructive interference (soft or no noise). represents the wavelength of the 250Hz tone.

Constructive or Destructive

You are 4 away from speaker A; 5 away from speaker B and at the speakers the waves are exactly in phase.

You are 3 away from speaker A; 4 away from speaker B and at the speakers the waves are exactly out of phase.

You are 2.5 away from speaker A; 3 away from speaker B and at the speakers the waves are exactly in phase.

You are 4.5 away from speaker A; 4 away from speaker B and at the speakers the waves are exactly out of phase.

Explanation / Answer

When path difference is n*lambad then constructive interference and when path difference is (n +0.5)

then descructive interference happens.

where n = 0, 1 , 2,3,4...........

path diff = 5lambda - 5 lambda = 1 * lambda

constructive

------------

path diff = 4lambda - 3lambda = 1 * lambda

constructive

---------

path diff = 2lambda - 2.5lambda = 0.5 * lambda

destructive

------------

path diff = 4.5lambda - 4 lambda = 0.5 * lambda

destructive
