Question

Answers pre-work questions (LA)-done individually 1) What type of hazard is associated with Ethanolamine? (1pt) 2) A pair of students have done a similar experiment and obtained the results bellow. X,Y and Z were increasing concentrations of substrate. One student observed that something went wrong and they were working at the saturation of enzyme. How could you explain the observation that they were working at saturation of enzyme based on the graph bellow? (1pt) 3.5 E 2.5 X mM p-NPP Y mM p-NPP ZmM p-NPP E 1.5 0.5 0 025 05 0751 125 15 1.75 2 2.25 25 275 3 325 as Time (min)

Explanation / Answer

1]Hazards Identification: According to Regulation 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard; 29 CFR Part 1910.1200

Classification of the product Flam.

The substance is corrosive to the respiratory tract , the skin and the eyes. Corrosive on ingestion. The vapour is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system . Exposure could cause lowering of consciousness.

2]Saturation of an enzyme means a point in reaction where the speed does not increase furthermore. It means that all the enzyme molecules in the reaction mixture are now saturated with their substrate molecules. All the active sites of an enzyme are also saturated, this point is actually the point of maximum velocity of the reaction. Thus if the graph coordinates shows no further increase in speed then, that is the maxiumum velocity of the reaction. If the coordinates do show an increasing trend in the graph then the reading is still lower than the saturation point of the reaction.
