Question
I am writing an essay on malaria, and I was wondering what cultural names people in Africa have for the disease. Not the scientific names (I researched malaria in lab and am well acquainted with its scientific terminology), but names that reveal a bit of culture/impact of the disease. Stories and legends tied to malaria would also be helpful! I'd like to learn about the linguistic reflection of the disease.
For instance, how the Chinese sometimes called Tuberculosis "Bad Palace," how the Bubonic Plague was advertised as the "Black Death," or how in Medieval Italian malaria translates to "Bad Air."
Info about the disease in any African tongue is useful, though Swahili is a particular focus!
