Question

A certain toaster has a heating element made of Nichrome resistance wire. When the toaster is first connected to a 140 V source of potential difference (and the wire is at a temperature of 20.0°C), the initial current is 1.9 A. However, the current begins to decrease as the resistive element warms up. When the toaster reaches its final operating temperature, the current has dropped to 1.53 A.

(a) Find the power the toaster converts when it is at its operating temperature.
1 W
(b) What is the final temperature of the heating element?
2 °C

Explanation / Answer

a) Power = VI = 140*1.53 = 214.2 W
b) Initial resistance of nichrome wire, Ri = V/Ii = 140/1.9 = 73.684 ohm
Final resistance of nichrome wire, Rf = V/If = 140/1.53 = 91.2 ohm

let R = Ro(1 + kT)
from the data available on internet
k = 0.00017 per degree C
so 73.684 = Ro(1 + 0.00017*20)
and 91.2 = Ro(1 + 0.00017*T)
dividing both

1.2377 = [ 1+0.00017*T ]/[1.0034]
T = 1422.98 degree C
