Question

v. Given the following symbols battery -H I resistor -W ammeter voltmeter Wire: a. Show how two resistors, R 2.00 and R2 4.00, can be connected in Parallel to a 12 volt battery. Place in your circuit an ammeter to measure the total current, and ammeters to measure the current through Rus R2 and a voltmeter to read the voltage dropped across Ri. [6] b. Determine the total resistance of the circuit. [3] c. Determine the total current in the circuit. [3] d. Determine the voltage dropped in R112] e. Determine the Power delivered to R2. [3]

Explanation / Answer

a) When R1 and R2 are connecetd in parallel with battery,

hence voltage drop across R1 and R2 will be same emf of battery.

Voltage drop across R1, V1 = 12 volt

Voltage drop across R2, V2 = 12 volt

Current through R1,I1 = V1/R1 = 12 / 2 = 6 A

Current through R2, I2 = V2 / R2 = 12/4 = 3 A

total current, I1 + I2 = 6 +3 = 9 A

b) total resistacne (for parallel connection)

1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/2 + 1/4

Req = 2 x 4 / 6 = 1.33 ohm

c) I = V/Req = 12 / 1.33 =9 A

d) current through R1, I1 = I x R2 / (R1 + R2) = 9 x 4 / 6 = 6 A
V1 = I1 R1 = 6 x 2 = 12 volt

e) P = v^2 / R

P = 12^2 / 4 = 36 Watt
