Question

A cube of glass (n = 1.60) is immersed in water (n = 1.33). A ray of light traveling in the glass is incident at a flat surface of the glass. What is the critical angle theta_C for internal reflection back into the glass? A ray of light traveling in water (n = 1.33) is incident at the flat surface of a block of glass (n = 1.60). If the incident ray in water makes an angle of 34.0 degree with the normal to the interface, what angle does the ray that is refracted into the glass make with the normal?

Explanation / Answer

As we know that the critical angle is given as

Here n1 = 1.33 and n2 = 1.6

Hence the angle will be

Angle = sin -1 (1.33/1.6) = 56.22 degree
