Question
For each of the following questions, circle the letter(s) corresponding to the best answer(s) from the options given. Each question is worth 5 points: partial credit will be given for those problems asking you to "Circle all that apply." Two metal rings of radius R and radius 2R are placed one inside the other and set on a table, as shown. The outer ring has a counterclockwise current i (there is no current in the smaller ring). Which of the following changes would cause a clockwise current in the smaller ring? Increasing the current in the outer ring. Decreasing the current in the outer ring. Picking up the outer ring and lifting it up off the table. Stretching the inner ring to a radius 1.5R. Stretching the outer ring to a radius 6R (while keeping the same current).Explanation / Answer
By the right hand rule magnetic field due current due to outer right I1 will be outward as shown in the figure.
By Snell’s law e= - Nd/dt, to clockwise current in the inner ring induced magnetic field by current in the inner ring I1 , that is B1 must be opposite to B1 so into the page as shown the figure.
So to increase the magnitude of B1 in the outward direction we must increase I2.
Hence option A) is correct.
