Question
Two very long current carrying conductors lie in the same plane as shown. Current I_1 = 2.50 A runs west to east and current I_2 = 5.00 A runs south to north. Choose the origin (x = 0, y = 0, z = 0) as the point where the wires cross. (a)Determine the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the point (x = 5.00 cm, y = 2.00 cm, Z = 0). (b)Determine the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the point (x = -3.00 cm, y = 2.00 cm, Z = 0). (c) Determine the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the point (x = 0, y = 0, Z = 5.00 cm).Explanation / Answer
Let current passing through the forst wire = I 1 = 2.5 A
current passing through the second wire = I2 = 5 A
when current passing through the first & second wire
Net magnetic field due to these wires at point (5, 5, 0 )
B = o I 1 / 2 r2 + o I 2 / 2 r1 + 0
= 4 x10^-7 (2.5) / 2 (0.05) + 4 x10^-7 (5) / 2 (0.02) + 0
= (314 + + 1570 ) x 10-7 T
= 1884 x 10-7 T
thus, Magnetic field at point (5,5,0) is B = 320 x10-7 T
(b) magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at (0, 0 , 5 ) is
0 (since it is out of plane of magnetic field formation)
For part b and c apply the same formula
