Question

The electric field lines surrounding three charges are shown in the figure below. The center charge is q_2 = -10.7 mu C. What are the signs of q_1 and q_3? Find q_. Find q_3 Four lightweight, plastic spheres, labeled A, 6, C, and D, are suspended from threads in various combinations, as illustrated in the figure. It is given that the net charge on sphere D is and that the other spheres have net charges of +Q, -Q, or 0. From the results of the four experiments shown in the figure, determine the net charge of spheres A, B, and C. sphere A sphere B sphere C Suppose particles A, B, and C in the figure have identical masses and charges of the same magnitude. What Is the sign of the charge for each of the three particles? Particle A Particle B Particle C Explain.

Explanation / Answer

given,

q2=-10.7 uC

a)

from the diagram,

the sign of both q1 and q2 is positive

because, electric field lines are radially outward

b)

from the symmetry of electric field line,

q2=q1+q3

and

no of field lines coming out from the charge q1 and q2 is same,

hence,

q1=q3

there fore,

q2=2*q1

====> q1=q2/2

q1=(10.7uC)/2

q1=5.35 uC

and

c)

q3=q2/2

q3=(10.7uC)/2

q1=5.35 uC
