Question
3. In Lab1, one of the experiments asked you to fill a dialysis bag with a salt solution. Let's imagine something different now: You pour salt solution into a beaker. You make a bag of dialysis tubing containing silver nitrate solution, pat it dry, and place the bag of silver nitrate solution into the beaker of salt solution. a) [2 pts] Complete Table 1 below. Tabla 1: Solution Color Changes Recorded Solution Color of solution in bag Color of solution in beaker Initial Color Final Color 12 pts] Which is the better setup, what you did in lab or what's described here? That would depend on the purpose of the experiment. Explain your reasoning. b)Explanation / Answer
A) When silver nitrate solution is treated with sodium chloride solution, it results in the formation of silver chloride precipitate and sodium nitrate.
AgNO3 + NaCl ---> AgCl + NaNO3
Silver nitrate is colorless but when exposed to air, it becomes black in color. Sodium chloride solution is colorless. Silver chloride is white precipitate and sodium nitrate is yellow in color.
So, the initial color of the solution in beaker is colorless and it becomes yellow in color after the reaction. Similarly, the initial color if the solution in the dialysis bag is black and it changes to white after the reaction.
B) The precipitate is formed inside the dialysis bag. So, this setup is better than that of laboratory.
