Question
Electrons and protons are passing through a small hollow tube. calculate the current and/or indicate its direction in each of the following situations.
A) A total charge of Q = 1.5C passes through the tube toward the right in a time of 1s.
B) A total charge of Q = -1.5C passes through the tube towards the right in a time of 1s.
C) A total of 3 protons and 2 electrons pass through the tube towards the right in a time of 1 nanosecond.
D) 3 protons pass through towards the right while 2 electrons pass through the tube towards the left in a time of 1 nanosecond
Explanation / Answer
We know from the defination of electric current that,
I = Q/t
Direction of current is same as the flow of positive charge.
A) Q = + 1.5 C ; t = 1 s
I = Q/t = 1.5 C/1s = 1.5 A
Hence, I = 1.5 A towards right.
B)Q = -1.5 C and t = 1 s
I = Q/t = -1.5 C/1 s = -1.5 A
Hence, I = 1.5 A towards left.
C) t = 1 ns = 10-9 s
In this case, the net charge is that of 5 proton. (Q = 3qp - 2qe = 1qp )
we know that, e = 8 x 10-19 C ;
I = Q/t = 8 x 10-19 C /10-9 s = 8 x 10-10 A
Hence, I = 8 x 10-10 A towards right.
D) In this case, the net charge will be, that of 1 proton
Q = 1.6 x 10-19 and t = 10-9 s
I = Q/t = 1.6 x 10-19 / 10-9 = 1.6 x 10-10 A
Hence, I = 1.6 x 10-10 A towards right.
