The cerebral cortex of the brain is organised into different areas like primary auditory area, primary visual area and primary somatosensory cortex. Primary somatosensory cortex receives information from all parts of the body through thalamic projections. Sensory homunculus represents the map in the sensory cortex which are specially dedicated to sensory processing for different anatomical structures. This is responsible for the phenomenon of phantom limb, a condition where the individuals with amputated limbs still believe that they are moving their limb.
