Question
1. You will be examining the water quality of Raquette River and Woodstock Pond. In your own words, how would you define water quality? What factors would you consider to determine if a body of water is healthy or unhealthy? Based on your knowledge of the two locations of these bodies of water, develop a testable hypothesis about these two bodies of water.
2. Find a relevant news article that discusses coral bleaching and ocean acidification. Explain the relationship between ocean acidification and global climate change.
Explanation / Answer
Let me answer 2 nd part of your question. Please find below.
The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, it is composed of roughly 2,900 individual reefs and 940 islands and
The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia.
Danger faced by great barrier reef :-
1.The GBRMPA (Great barrier reef marine park authority ) consider climate change, poor water quality, coastal development, and some impacts from fishing to be the area's major threats
1.The reef is threatened by storms, coral bleaching and ocean acidification.harmful government policies and ongoing conflicts of interest over mining royalties are risks of an equivalent magnitude for this threat
Measures:-
1. Empower the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority:- unleash a powerful body with a mandate to better manage the marine park.
2.Should not allow massive and controversial compromises to the marine ecosystem:-
means to prevent dumping of dredge spoils on or near the reef rather than having protection zones
3.Introduce tighter controls on agriculture for all catchments that flow into the Great Barrier Reef.
The powerful sugarcane and beef cattle grazing industries need to do more to stop pesticides and nutrients reaching the reef.
Answer 1
Water quality can be defined as the condition of water that supports biotic environment within the waterbody and supports the organisms depending on it.
Biological Oxygen Demand:-
The amount of oxygen required by the microorganisms to breakdown organic substances present in water.
BOD value in polluted water is normally higher than the fresh water. Increased BOD can be resulted due to domestic sewage, petroleum residues and wastes of animals and crops.
Chemical Oxygen Demand:-
It is used to measure amount of organic substances in given water.
There are many other parameters like Nitrogen, Phosphorus levels, types of fish present, presence of coral reefs, fish population etc are taken into consideration to monitor water quality.
When comparing a raquette river and wood stock pond .
Rivers are rich in aquatic life and aquatic flora than Woodstock pond.
Water quality may be poor in river as it runs longer distances which includes urban sewage. Strict regulations are in place to protect ponds. Due to their small area, they are well protected.
River supports more fish population and supports aquatic life better than ponds
