Question

R2

Batman is attempting to defuse a bomb created by The Riddler and opens it to find a set of resistors connected as shown in the figure below. He can tell from the coloring on several of the resistors that some are equivalent to each other, and he determines that R_1 = 52.00 ohm, R_2 = 105.0 ohm, R_3 = 150.0 ohm, and R_4 = 315.0 ohm. However, he needs to know the resistance of R_5 before he can begin defusing the bomb. Using his Bat-Ohm-Meter, he is able to determine that the equivalent resistance between points a and b is 200.0 ohm. What is the resistance of the unknown resistor?

Explanation / Answer

R1 =52 ohm , R2 =105 ohm , R3 = 150 ohm , R4 =315 ohm ,R = 200 ohms

in parallel combination R =R1*R2/(R1+R2)

In sereis combination R =R1+R2

R1 and R2 (left) are in parallel

R12 = 52*105/(52+105) =34.8 ohms

R1 and R3 are in sereis R13 = 52+ 150 = 202 ohms

R2 and R4 are in sereis R24 = 105+ 315 = 420 ohms

R13 and R24 are in parallel

R1324 = (202*420)/(202+420) = 136.4 ohms

R12, R1324, R5 are in sereis

R =R12+R1324+R5

200 = 34.8+136.4 +R5

unkown resistance R5 =28.8 ohms
