Explanation / Answer
Main development leading up to theory of plate gectonics are-
1)Continental drift(1915)-proposed by Alfred Wegner in 1915.According to him, continents were joined together to form a suoercontinent called PANGEA. His hypothesis was rejected because he was unable to explain how continents had moved away.
2) Convection current theory1929- given by Arthur Holmes. He said that convection current are the forces which is responsible for this continental drift.
3)Discovery of mid ocean ridges1950-Sonar is used to discover the chains of mountains which are present in the bottom of ocean.
4)Seafloor spreading-proposed by Harry Hess in 1963.
5)Polarity(1963)-proposed by Fred Vine and D.Mathews.They supported Hess's theory and proved that.
6)Theory of plate tectonics1968- proposed by J.Tuzo Wilson. He compile all the evidences from previous theories. He said that the plate tectonics move relatively to each other and are moved by convection current.
Theory of plate tectomics is widely accepted theory
